Publish your Research
Note to students:
If you are considering submitting anything for a conference, poster presentation, or for publication, you need to first talk with your thesis advisor about what you would like to submit, and ask for guidance when drafting a proposal. The reasons are numerous, but here are the top two:
- Your thesis advisor is an expert in your disciplinary area as well as on professional engagement (i.e., submitting proposals for conferences and publications), so by all means consult them if you are considering submitting anything. You're representing UD as well as yourself and your thesis advisor, so please ensure you're presenting your best work by consulting them first. This will be the time where you can also talk with your advisor about authorship as it relates to your own work.
- Speaking of authorship, if you're in a group or lab setting where you've gathered data on behalf of a faculty member, or gathered data that is part of a larger faculty project, you are beholden to talk with your thesis advisor about submitting anything for a presentation or publication, since the work you did was part of a collaborative project involving other researchers. Again, this will be the time when you can talk with your advisor about authorship (e.g., taking first or second author position), but the important thing is to initiate a conversation with them.
