Summer Scholars

The Summer Scholars Program enables selected undergraduates, generally sophomores and juniors, to conduct in-depth research or creative work with University faculty. Students in the Summer Scholars Program work on their projects full-time for ten weeks in the summer and continue to complete three credits' worth of research in the following academic year. Research and creative work is generally completed under the close supervision of a faculty member. The research done during the academic year may be part of the senior thesis for the Degree with Distinction or Honors Degree with Distinction. Each Scholar will receive a stipend of $3,000 and a summer housing allowance of $500.

There are five different divisions under the Summer Scholars program:

  • Arts and Humanities Scholars

  • CHEP Scholars(College of Human Services, Education, and Public Policy)

  • Social Science Scholars

  • Science and Engineering Scholars

  • Life Sciences Scholars(Except with regards to the application, this program is grouped with the Science and Engineering program)

  • NOTE: students apply to the scholar program according to the department of their faculty advisor; if you are unsure about which department your faculty member belongs to, please click here

For more information about the specific Summer Scholars programs, students should consult the handbook for their scholar program (see side menu or click on your program from the list above). In general, the requirements for each program are similar; however, there are some subtle yet important differences. Interested students are also encouraged to make an advisement appointment at the URP office (undergradresearch@udel.edu).

The application for each program can be filled out online by clicking here. All scholars are also required to fill out a Letter of Intent, which is your agreement to meet the requirements of the Scholars Program. Applications are due March 2, 2009.
