Politicizing the Public: The Public Sphere and Poplular Culture in Germany, 1770-1848 (Excerpt)

I can vouch for the quality and importance of the project proposed, for it constitutes an integral part of the research for my second book. In this regard the importance is undeniable. As a social historian, I need to cast a wide net over many areas and materials. Because my book addresses the relationship of print culture to popular culture in Germany between 1770 and 1840, the range of newspapers, almanacs, journals, etc., is mind-boggling. Hence, having the student comb through sources that are available in the US in microfilm form would be immeasurably helpful. This is important preliminary work that needs to be done.
