Abstract
For college journalists, one of their main jobs is to accurately, inclusively and fairly report on issues that are occurring on their respective campuses. As college and universities often tend to be a hotbed of protest, it is likely that college journalism students will cover at least one protest during their tenure. This project strives to answer the question of how college journalists can effectively cover racial justice issues and the protests that follow on their respective college campuses. The rules and guidelines included in my project are important for college journalists to keep in mind when reporting on protests regarding issues of race and racism. The following guide includes general guidelines for covering sensitive topics, examples of the do’s and don’t’s when it comes to covering these issues, and overall important resources for college journalists. This guide will be an accessible, living document with the purpose of being utilized by college journalists throughout the United States for years to come.
