Abstract
Riverview Cemetery is a public cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware that has been seeking evaluation and design/planning through the use of grant funding to improve the space’s appeal and increase the number of visitors. Their ultimate goal is for the cemetery to become a valued green space for the community again, fostering a new user group that will be willing to volunteer to help maintain it. It is the goal of this project to work towards developing a 5-year plan for the cemetery that outlines how, especially through tree plantings, the space can be developed to accomplish their mission. Through careful site analysis, community engagement, and creative design thinking, the project has produced a foundational framework for the rest of the cemetery’s planning in the future. The framework draws attention to key roadway routes through the cemetery and their potential for an intentional trail, along with key open areas in the cemetery and the opportunities and constraints they have for certain design interventions.
