Abstract

Period poverty continues to affect millions of people by limiting access to basic feminine hygiene products, especially among individuals experiencing financial hardship or housing insecurity. Without these essential resources, many face challenges that can impact their health, confidence, education, and overall quality of life. Although previous research has shown the widespread effects of period poverty, access to feminine care products and women’s health education remains a challenge in many communities.

The Her Haven Empowerment Project was created to help address this need by providing feminine hygiene kits and increasing awareness of women’s health. This project focused on understanding the barriers people face when accessing feminine hygiene products, identifying the items most needed in care kits, and exploring how access to these resources can improve daily life and well-being.

Research was conducted by reviewing existing information on period poverty, working with community partners, and identifying the products and educational materials that would best meet the needs of the intended recipients. Using this information, 200 feminine hygiene kits were assembled and distributed to women at the YWCA Delaware. Each kit included essential hygiene products along with educational resources to encourage healthy menstrual hygiene practices and promote women’s health awareness.

The project demonstrated that even small, community-based efforts can make a meaningful difference. By increasing access to essential hygiene products and providing educational resources, the Her Haven Empowerment Project helped support women with immediate needs while promoting dignity, confidence, and overall well-being.
