Abstract

For Me to Know and You to Find Out is a mixed media exploration of trans identity, and being human. Combining 2D mediums of painting and collage with 3D elements of air dry clay, cardboard, and found objects, I employ both traditional and unconventional materials to construct layered scenes that encourage viewers to empathize and extract their own meaning. The pieces are visually busy, and don’t make their points outright; I invite viewers to slow down, observe, and reflect.

For Me to Know and You to Find Out digs into the yearning to be seen, the fear of being misunderstood, and the absurdity of oppressive reasoning. This project responds to transphobia by building common anti-trans ideas – such as corruption or mutilation – into physical sculptures. Whimsical materials like felt and cardboard, with bright and saturated colors, help create this stark juxtaposition of serious hostile rhetoric and playful childlike joy. These hateful concepts are almost mocked with simple visuals that ask, “what are you talking about? I’m just a person too, trying to find my way.”
