Abstract

“Knitwear Reimagined: Advancing Sustainable Men’s Knitwear With Traditional and Modern Technology” is an undergraduate research project that explores the intersection of sustainability, menswear design, and advanced knitwear technology. Inspired by fishermen and the ocean, the collection “Urchin” draws on maritime functionality, textures, and color stories to inform both its aesthetic and its sustainability goals. The oceanic theme underscores the use of biodegradable and recycled  yarns like wool and recycled polyester, as well as zero-waste techniques that reflect a respect for natural resources and long wearing craftsmanship.

The project involves analyzing current menswear knitwear trends, researching sustainable practices, and developing design concepts translated into technical materials. Prototypes are produced using fully fashioned computerized knitting technology, allowing for seamless garment construction with minimal waste.

By focusing on a traditionally overlooked area of fashion, creative and sustainable menswear knitwear, this research fills key gaps in undergraduate fashion education. It also equips the researcher with industry relevant skills in innovation, design development, and ethical production, reflecting fashion’s shift toward environmental responsibility and advances in technology.
