Stitch, Shape, and Trend: Developing a Machine-Knit Merchandising Line

Abstract

This research project explored the development of a machine-knit merchandising line representing the University of Delaware Fashion Department while incorporating current fashion trends and knitwear design principles. Trend forecasting, fiber selection, knit structures, and garment design were used to create products that reflected both the department’s identity and the self-expressive style of the UD community.

Methods included analyzing industry forecasting reports, runway collections, color palettes, motifs, and garment silhouettes. Acrylic, cotton, hemp, and wool fiber blends were evaluated for sustainability, durability, comfort, washability, and cost-effectiveness. The University of Delaware Blue Hen logo was translated into knit graphics using DesignaKnit software and Excel, requiring multiple iterations to simplify the image while maintaining its recognizable identity within the technical limitations of machine knitting.

Eight knit swatches and one full-size sweater prototype were produced using a Silver Reed SK840 flatbed knitting machine. The prototype incorporated striped sleeves, balanced color placement, and a Blue Hen graphic on the front panel. Existing sweater drafting techniques were adapted and refined through trial and error to achieve proper shaping and fit.

The project demonstrated that successful knitwear design requires balancing creative vision with the technical constraints of machine knitting. Transferring graphics into knit-compatible formats proved to be one of the greatest challenges. The resulting concepts provide a foundation for future University of Delaware Fashion Department merchandise, giving students apparel they can take pride in wearing while strengthening the department’s visual identity.
