Abstract

While not always being known as the cleanest country, even going so far as to be called a “garbage island” in the 90s, Taiwan has come a far way towards a brighter future for the environment. In this project, I traveled to Taiwan to take photos that show the true standard of cleanliness for public places, as well as survey some Taiwanese people to see their thoughts about the environment. My aim was to create a powerful narrative by pairing these photos with the quotes of Taiwanese citizens. Throughout the course of this project, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture, and see how the everyday treatment of the environment varied in both urban and rural areas. I was able to identify many daily activities that help lead a cleaner life, which hopefully we can gain inspiration from and adopt.
